David Reiner

David Reiner serves as an independent director on the Capital Square Apartment REIT, Inc. board of directors and as chairman of the audit committee. From 2011 until April 2019, he was a managing director with Regional Real Estate Investment Corporation, an investment advisor that manages private investment funds that made opportunistic real estate investments, primarily in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. His responsibilities included investment/fund development, fund raising as well as the origination and structuring of investments. He also oversaw the performance of the investments of its various funds and ventures as well as RREIC’s investment and corporate strategy. He was a member of the investment committee. From 2003 until 2011, Reiner was a managing director with Grosvenor Investment Management US, Inc. and its predecessor, where he was a member of GIM’s fund investment committee, management committee and Grosvenor’s global marketing/capital markets committee. He was also co-manager of Grosvenor Residential Investment Partners, a highly successful commingled fund that invested in homebuilding projects around the country. He was also responsible for the company’s strategic planning, fund development, capital markets activities and investor relations. From 2000 until 2003, Reiner was a co-founder and managing director of Legg Mason Real Estate Investors, Inc., a specialty real estate lender that provided mezzanine and bridge loans to the commercial real estate industry. He was a member of the company’s board of directors and investment committee. Prior to joining Legg Mason, he was a senior vice president and principal of Transwestern Commercial Services, a leading commercial real estate company, and its predecessor (The Carey Winston Company), where he was responsible for the company’s principal investment activities and its corporate acquisitions. From 1987 until 1993, Reiner was a senior vice president of CRI, Inc., one of the largest owners of multifamily housing in the U.S. He was previously an attorney with the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm of Bishop, Liberman, Cooke, Pursell & Reynolds (now Winston & Strawn), where he specialized in tax and finance. Reiner began his career in the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, serving for eight years under Presidents Carter and Reagan. He worked directly with Congress to implement the department’s major initiatives in the areas of taxation, international trade and energy policy.

Reiner served on the board of directors of Front Yard Residential (RESI: NYSE), a REIT which was established to own single-family rental homes on a national basis from its founding in 2012 until his retirement from the board in May 2019, serving as chairman of the board from January 2015 through May 2018. During his tenure as chairman, he led the board during the company’s transformation from a hybrid REIT to a pure play single-family rental REIT. He was a member of the board’s audit and investment committees and chairman of the compensation committee.

Reiner served on the board of directors of Home Loan Servicing Solutions, Ltd. (HLSS:Nasdaq) when it was established in 2011 and served as chairman of the audit committee. HLSS invested in mortgage assets, including mortgage servicing rights, mortgage advances and residential mortgages. Prior to joining the HLSS board, Reiner spent three years (2009-2012) on the board of directors of Ocwen Financial Corporation (OCN:NYSE), where he was a member of the audit committee and the governance and nominations committee.

Reiner has a Juris Doctor degree from George Mason University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. He completed graduate work in international affairs and economics at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies and the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
